Identification Tips:
- Length: 15 inches Wingspan: 36 inches
- Large diving duck
- Bill feathered to nostril
Adult male alternate:
- Pale green head with large white patch around eye
- Yellow bill
- Black underparts
- White upperparts
Adult female:
- Dark brown plumage with fine black barring
- Pale brown patch around eye
Similar species:
The adult male is not likely to be confused with any other duck. The dark
female is similar to other female eiders but note the patch around the eye and
the more extensive feathering on the bill.
