Geographic and Temporal Analysis of Winter Bird Populations

• The Christmas Bird Count provides critical information on wintering bird population abundance, distribution, and change over time. Here, we provide maps that allow users to access bird abundance data from the CBC. Results are presented as large-scale maps of average, effort-adjusted abundance, allowing users to access all information available for any location in North America. These maps are integrated into several projects, including:

  • The Patuxent Bird Quiz.
  We also provide links to a list of all maps, and to an analysis of population trends from the CBC

Historical CBC Analysis

This analysis of CBC data was conducted in 1997 based on average effort-adjusted counts from The Christmas Bird Count, 1959 - 1988. Patuxent staff are currently involved in updating this analysis using statistical methods developed at the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center.
