Birds of the Capitol Hill Parks
The Capitol Hill Parks managed by National Capital Parks-East include a variety of urban
triangles, medians, and squares, and four named parks,
Folger Park,
Lincoln Park, Marion Park, and
Stanton Park. Because these Parks have no unique
habitats, the birds
that nest in or frequent them are essentially those typical of urban neighborhoods.
Non-native Rock Doves, European Starlings, and House Sparrows are the most obvious
species. However, the trees and hedges in the Capitol Hill
Parks provide nesting sites
for several native bird species, including Mourning Dove, American Robin, Gray Catbird,
and Northern Mockingbird. Crows, Blue Jays, Carolina Chickadees, and Northern Cardinals
also may nest in or near the Parks. Few other species use the Capitol Hill Parks on a
regular basis, although a variety of species briefly stop over to rest or forage
during migration.
Additional information on each species on the checklist can be accessed through
hypertext links. Click on the species name to access general information from
the Patuxent Bird Identification Infocenter; a description of the information
available can be obtained by clicking on the "Species" heading in the
checklist. Additional information on the bird surveys can be accessed by clicking on
the "Summer" or "Winter" headings on the checklist.
If you see any of the boldfaced species, any species not already on the checklist, or
any species in a season
marked by a question mark, please report the sighting to:
